Reflecting over my life I have to tell you I have known some remarkable people who set in motion with in me a vision of impeccable understanding of both nature and spiritual aspects of life. Among those beloved to me are of course my parents. Joe Surls my father to me was a very kind and loving man who taught me the way of life on a ranch in north east Texas. I learned first hand the feeling of the bottom land and the animals around us.
My mother being a spiritual soul taught me to know the feeling for the spirit in the land
And sky.
Mother took me walking one day I couldn?t have been much older then five or six years old. We walked down a an old wagon trail and across a pasture, she picked up a stone handing it to me she asked me what I saw. The stone seemed to exploded, it was if I could see the world in this stone. When I told her what I saw she looked at me and said something that has been a corner stone in my life ever sense, ?Son you can do anything?. coming from her that was gospel.
I have based my art on those visions from that day . It is as though my third eye opened and nothing has been cancelled spiritually. She was the first white women ever to become a ?Beloved woman of the Sioux? she is a remarkable women and I am truly blest to be her son.
I have three siblings each are treasured by me and each have given me insight in their own way.
Along life?s path I have continued to work on my art it is my way of expressing my enter being and the continuing visions I see in the wood, in storm?s, lightening, water, nature its self. I see them all as being a life force of their own. I use a lot of raw material like rocks ,antler, and bone?s because I see them to have pure souls . That of which are much older and purer than humanity.
There is a river that surpasses age, intellect, religion and scientific explanation. There are many of us that have been blest to see into it. Those select few are changed forever. It is my hope that in some way my art may mimic that reflection and that in doing so open the door for a deeper understanding of the universal truths.

NOW HIS SEARCH IS FOR JUST ONE... TO UNDERSTAND WHAT WE HAVE DONE AND WHAT IS POSSIBLE...FOR THROUGH THE ONE COME THE MANY.
